I used to suffer from TMJ. It got so bad that I couldn't open my mouth wide enough to eat a few grains of cooked rice! The dentist treated me by prescribing pain medication for the muscle spasms that I was experiencing in my face; I also had to get braces. Once my teeth were straightened, the TMJ went away. It flares up only if I open my mouth really wide (to eat a big hamburger, for instance; or at the dentist when I have to keep my mouth open for dental work to be done). My orthodontist explained that it's like an old football injury. I just can't open my mouth that wide for very long without the TMJ flaring up. But I can tell you that the braces really did the trick for me.
